New figures from the Credit Confidential Credit Index show that one in 20 of us has been turned down for unsecured credit (that’s any type of borrowing where you won’t lose your house if you default) in the past six months.

These rejected applications make the problem even worse next time you try to get credit, because they leave a “footprint” on your credit file, making other lenders even more likely to turn you away.

So what can you do if you can’t get the card, loan or mortgage you want? Here are five ways to check your credit and make sure it is as clean as it can be.
